Discover West Rice Roll King 西关肠粉王

Tucked away at 124 Hester St in the heart of New York’s Chinatown, West Rice Roll King 西关肠粉王 feels like stepping into a tiny corner of Guangzhou without leaving Manhattan. The aroma hits first—steamy, warm, and savory, drifting out from the open kitchen where sheets of rice batter are poured, steamed, and rolled in a practiced rhythm. It’s hard not to be mesmerized watching the staff glide their spatulas under the delicate sheets before wrapping them around fillings like silky shrimp, tender beef, or Chinese dough sticks that add a playful crunch.

What makes this spot special is the consistency. Rice rolls can go wrong fast if the batter is too thick or the timing is off, but here they’re always whisper-thin and melt the second they hit your tongue. Food scholars often note that the art of cheong fun lies in controlling temperature and steam precisely—too hot and the sheet becomes rubbery, too cool and it tears. This team nails it every time, proving their mastery with every plate that leaves the counter glistening with soy sauce and a drizzle of sesame oil.

The menu keeps things straightforward, which works in its favor. Besides the classic rolls, there are congee bowls, soy milk, and a few sides like turnip cakes—ideal for mixing textures if you’re building a little breakfast feast. Locals know to show up early, especially on weekends, because once the morning crowd starts to roll in, the wait can stretch. Yet even then, there’s a comforting sense of efficiency: the kitchen keeps pace without ever rushing the delicate cooking process.

As a neighborhood fixture, it’s not just about the food but also the rhythm of the place. The tiny dining room fills with the hum of Cantonese chatter, clinking chopsticks, and the occasional hiss of fresh batter hitting hot trays. In a city overloaded with elaborate fusion menus, this diner reminds you why simple dishes rooted in tradition can hold their own for decades—and why so many New Yorkers quietly mark this spot on their personal map of go-to comfort food locations.

  • AMAZING. Hearty, filling, healthy and affordable. Nothing to complain about. If you like cilantro, please try the cilantro roll because it is absolutely delicious and fragrant. Shrimp roll is unbeatable as well. Very limited seating but there’s a park nearby so it’s worth to take away. I’d suggest not getting the take away packages for the environment as the park is really just a walk away.

  • One of my favorite spots to get fresh made-to-order rice rolls in Chinatown! The cheung fun here are hefty, about $5 each, the ingredients are very fresh, and you get to see the whole process of them being made. Love these soft, silky, smooth, delicate, steamy, bouncy, hot, stretchy blankets of deliciousness. One of my favorites is the curry fish ball rice rolls. Remember to add your free vegetable topping to the rice rolls - you get a choice of bean sprouts, scallions, or lettuce! We like to add bean sprouts for the extra crunch. • BEST rice rolls in NYC. Truly the lightest, thinnest, fluffiest I’ve ever had. Like a cloud! Everything else is a brick in comparison. Made to order; My faves are shrimp with scallion and egg with scallion. BUT….there’s one guy making every order by hand, so it is sloooooow. Sometimes wait time is 30-45min after you place your order. Even more annoyingly, at opening, they will fill all phone orders before even getting to the in-store orders of waiting customers.

  • Had the curry fish ball with rice roll and the mixed sauce rice roll, quite full for snack. Though the rice roll is different than those we have in Hong Kong/Cantonese style, these rice rolls are super thin, silky and chewy. Fish balls are tasty, and we love the spicy hot sauce! Waiting time around 20min, we have to walk around and back for the order. People are packed inside and outside the small store, hard to grab a seat in store, we enjoyed the rice rolls in the park. Really good comfort food.

  • This place is super clamped and has about 4 seats so it's hard to find a seat because it'll most likely be taken. I came at about 5:30pm on a Sunday and was lucky that there wasn't a line of people waiting to order so the service was quick. Food: The cheung fun is super super thin. While watching the cook make it, he put a small amount of the batter onto a large flat sheet pan and spread it on every corner — this helps to achieve the thinness of the rice noodles. Personally, i prefer the thinner rice noodles compared to thicker ones in texture. I love that they added a decent amount of meat compared to other places I've been to that skimp on the meat. I also added an egg (extra $1) which enhances the taste a lot! I do wish that they gave more soy sauce in the little containers. But overall, it was so silky, thin, and delicious. This place gives me a lot of nostalgia, back to when I was a kid going to school in Chinatown and every morning, my mother would take me to a small store on East Broadway & Essex that sold dim sum and rice noodles.

  • West Rice Roll King in Chinatown is the real deal for made-to-order rice rolls. Everything is prepared fresh, so be ready to wait—sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes over an hour—but it’s absolutely worth it. The ingredients are incredibly fresh, portions are generous, and the prices are very affordable for the quality. A true Chinatown gem if you have the patience.

  • Small space but fresh, tasty rice rolls. We ordered a simple beef rice roll and another beef rice roll but it added egg, scallion, and cilantro. The food was ready in about 10 minutes and they were very hot and fresh. They give you a small container of soy sauce and chili oil for take out orders. There are only about 4-5 seats along the wall so seating is very limited. If you plan on ordering food from here, I recommend taking the food to go and eating your meal across the street at the park.
